BREEDING Our breeding is currently the biggest breeding of Karachai horses not only in the Czech Republic but also in Europe. All horses have pedigree and Russian documents of origin; they also have documents of origin of the European Union and therefore can be easily sold and transported around the whole EU. Selection of horses, methodical supervision of the breeding and evaluation of horses is done by Professor V. A. Parfenov, inspector of Central breeding register of Russian Federation. V. A. Parfenov is a head of the horses breeding department at Moscow Agricultural Academy of K. A. Timirjazeva in Moscow, the only institution in Russia that is assigned to administration of breeding books of horses bred in Russian Federation. All our horses including foals will be included in the 6th part of the Russian breeding book that was published at the end of 2005.Professor V. A. Parfenov Our horses that were imported from Caucasus used to live in tabuns with half-wild life style and therefore had minimal contact and experience with people. In one year of work and introduction with the imported horses we were able to confirm all theoretical knowledge and in many aspects we were very positively surprised. Because we want to keep the living conditions for the horses from Caucasus in the maximal extent the horses live during the whole year on pastures in the hilly area of Czech forest. 9 healthy foals bore in our breeding stable in 2005. All births happened outside in paddocks without any human assistance and the born foals were able to run in 20 min in the head of the herd and be independent. In addition to breeding we are also focusing on sport activities. From spring to fall 2005 we were able to get under a saddle 8 horses in the age 3 – 7. Five of them have already attended distance races (some of them just one month after getting under a saddle)
More about sport qualities of Karachai horses you can find in Sport section. We haven’t been able to teach our horses to eat carrot, apples or sugar but they really enjoy birch twigs or thistles! They can “clean” pastures much better then sheep.
